Chronological Bible Reading for August 21
Jeremiah 41-45
Jeremiah 42:2 – It is so sad that these people recognize the power of God but do not receive Him as Lord themselves. They ask Jeremiah to pray to his God not their or our God.
Jeremiah 42:4 – Jeremiah reminds the people that Jehovah is their God also.
Jeremiah 42:6 – Now that they have made a vow to obey God they claim Him as their God.
Jeremiah 42:10–22 – God gives them a promise of life and safety with the BIG if they stay in the land. But if they won’t stay God warns them of what will happen to them, famine, plague, attack and death. God always considers obedience as much greater than sacrifices.
Jeremiah 42:20 – Jeremiah perceived that the hearts of the people were not toward God. As they said earlier “your God”.
Jeremiah 43:2 – The proof of the heart is in the actions of the hand and the speech of the mouth. These people did not want to follow God’s directions but wanted to follow their own fear of one that God can control and have no fear of God. These people have always had the propensity to follow their own path and not God’s. When they came out of Egypt and God was providing manna some went out on the Sabbath to look for it. Some even went out on the Sabbath to gather wood for a fire. Abram was told to leave his family and go to where God told him but he took his father with him part of the way and his nephew all the way to Canaan before his fellowship with God was restored.
Jeremiah 44:2 – Because King Zedekiah would not surrender to the Babylonians when they came to invade, Jerusalem is in lifeless and in ruins
Jeremiah 44:7 – These people are going to exile themselves from God and the land, with none of them to remain for the posterity of Israel.
Jeremiah 44:16 – They asked for God’s guidance in vain. They were acting when they went to Jeremiah for God’s direction and it did not benefit them because they did not put God’s direction into their heart and lives.
Jeremiah 44:18 – These people have found a new god to worship, not the Father but a queen. They traded the Creator, Protector, Savior, and Sustainer for an idol with no power because of their pride of their own “knowledge”.
Jeremiah 44:20 – Jeremiah makes no reference to a god or queen here because he knows their burning of incense is only for their self because they put themselves before God and make of themselves false gods.
Jeremiah 44:28 – God takes His time to finish His promise but He does here by giving a small remnant a chance to return to Judah.
Jeremiah 44:30 – Pharaoh–hophra – Herodotus calls him Apries (589 BC to 570 BC)
