Exodus 7-9
![]()
Exodus 7:20 – The first plague attacked the Nile River that the Egyptians worshiped as a god because it overflowed every year to water the fields that provided food for them. Some people try to explain it away by saying that it was choked with dirt washed from upstream, but what about the containers already filled with water?
Exodus 8:5 – Frogs represented the goddess Heqet the symbol of fertility and resurrection Some people try to explain it away by saying the frogs came out of the river because of the bad water, but seven days after the water was turned to blood? Why not sooner?
Exodus 8:17 – Now God shows His supremacy to their god of the land (Geb). Some people say that the lice came from the dead frogs, but the only host for lice are humans.
Exodus 8:23 – Now God is showing Pharaoh that He can protect Israel.
Exodus 8:24 – These swarms could have been flies, mosquitoes or scarabs showing God’s supremacy over their god of creation, movement of the sun, life and resurrection (Khepri – also means scarab beetle) and the goddess of Uatchit the goddess of the marshes where many insects live and she is depicted with wings. Could some have come from the dead frogs? Yes but they did not come into the area where Israel resided.
Exodus 9:6 – Killing the cattle of Egypt was an affront to their god Hathor that was said to have the head of a cow and Apis the bull god, symbol of fertility. Again Israel was protected by God. Whether it was because there were not flies to spread disease there or not, God protected those He chose.
Exodus 9:10 – God continued to show His supremacy over Sekhmet the goddess of power over disease, Sunu the pestilence god and Isis the goddess of healing.
Exodus 9:16 – When the nation Israel reached Jericho the inhabitants there had heard about the things that God had done to the Egyptians those forty years before.
Exodus 9:19 – This plague of hail comes with mercy to those that believe (trust) God. God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repent (II Peter 3:9) so He tells Pharaoh to get them in shelter. God is showing His supremacy to Nut, their goddess of the sky, Osris the god of crops and Set the god of storms.
Exodus 9:26 – Israel still protected.
Exodus 9:27 – Instead of turning to worship God and pray knowing that he had sinned Pharaoh asked Moses and Aaron to pray for him. It shows that God protected Moses and Arron from the hail as they traveled back and forth.
Exodus 9:32 – God is showing mercy to those that will be left in Egypt by leaving them with food growing for later.
