Bible Reading for April 20 (ONPP)
I Samuel 13 – 16, Psalms 94
I Samuel 13:8 – Saul you were given the example of the people waiting for Samuel before beginning the feast or sacrifice, what is wrong with you? even if the Philistines were attacking right now you should not try to take the office of priest as well as king. God would save you because of your reliance on His time. Even if the people do scatter did not God defeat the Meianites with Gideon and three hundred men.
I Samuel 13:13 – Saul has had the possible heritage of the kingdom taken away from him. God knew that this would happen when He chose Saul as a king that the world would honor. Saul was of the tribe of Benjamin but it was from Judah that God had chosen His King and He showed that to Jacob when he blessed his sons near the end of his life.
I Samuel 13:14 – Now that Israel is experiencing what a king is in their land God is preparing a man of God to show them that He works through Himself not the strength that the world sees.
I Samuel 13:19 – There was no smith but Jonathan had just struck the garrison and hopefully retrieved the arms there. And back in chapter 7 Israel defeats the Philistines and the arms available there should have been taken. With these wins did God cause the Philistines to fear so much that they dropped their own arms and Israel killed them with their own weapons? Who needs a smith when the opposing army brings you the arms and supplies to defeat them with.
I Samuel 13:20 – Who needs a smith to sharpen a sword? Many use a stone to put an edge on a blade.
I Samuel 13:22 – So none of these 600 men had a sword or spear. Where were the arms of those that they had previously defeated? God will surly fight for them and provide for their need.
I Samuel 14:4 – This place was used again in WWI when the British troops, led by Gen. Allenby, set ambush for the Turks.
I Samuel 14:20 – God has chosen to fight for Israel in the same fashion that He did for Gideon.
I Samuel 14:32 – These people were so hungry because of Saul’s command that they did not obey God’s command to not eat with the blood.
I Samuel 14:37 – So Saul’s rash command not only caused Israel to sin but allowed the Philistines to escape and trouble Israel later.
I Samuel 14:45 – The people have already started to fall away from Saul.
I Samuel 15:1 – God through Samuel, is telling Saul to be careful to follow all that He has commanded. God is always ready to forgive when a person turns to follow Him.
I Samuel 15:8 – Oops Saul you didn’t listen carefully as Samuel told you. So many people today do not listen to God’s Word. In Hosea God says “My people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge.” Because Saul has rejected knowledge God will reject him from being king.
I Samuel 15:22 – If we overcharge someone and give the profit to the Lord are we not doing the same thing as Saul did? Does Jehovah enjoy our repentance more than our obedience? NO.
I Samuel 15:23 – Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. Stubbornness is inwardly idol worship. A person must first consider them self as more important than God, as they are breaking the other nine commandments. Therefore, they are making of themselves a god, more important than God, worshiping themselves..
I Samuel 15:29 – God is the Glory of Israel. He does not lie, He will not go against His promises or nature. What God has said He will not change. Look carefully and remember God gives us the choice “The BIG If.”
I Samuel 15:35 – In looking at the Hebrew through Strong’s Reference Dictionary the last part of this verse could mean that God comforted Samuel instead of God repenting. It also could mean that God mourned that Israel had to learn the hard way what it means to honor Him.
I Samuel 16:6 – Samuel you said yourself in chapter 13 verse 14 that God was looking for a man after His own heart not the eyes of the world.
I Samuel 16:11 – Did God raise up David to love and trust Him so that Saul would only see a child instead of a rival?
I Samuel 16:14 – Saul’s guilty conscience troubled him the rest of his days. If he had turned to worship God and follow Him God may have extended his reign and victories over the enemies of Israel. This does show how God showed control over the evil spirit in Saul before turning away from him.
I Samuel 16:16 – So the worship of self in soothing music is preferable to worshiping God.
I Samuel 16:18 – Saul’s men are already calling David a mighty warrior and man of battle.
I Samuel 16:21 – David became Saul’s armor–bearer! But did Saul ever go out to fight?
