Psalms 119:133 Order my steps in Your Word; and do not let any iniquity rule over me.
Chronological Bible Reading for April 19
I Samuel 28-31; Psalms 18
I Samuel 28:13 – A man of God would not come up from the ground, he would be in Heaven with the Lord.
God permitted the devil, to answer the request, to put on Samuel’s shape, that those who would not receive the love of the truth might be given up to strong delusions and believe a lie. That the devil, by the divine permission, should be able to personate Samuel is not strange, since he can transform himself into an angel of light! Nor is it strange that he should be permitted to do it upon this occasion, that Saul might be driven to despair, by inquiring of the devil, since he had not gotten an answer when he went to enquire of the Lord. Saul, being told of gods ascending, was eager to know what was the form of this deity, and in what shape he appeared, so far was he from conceiving any horror at it, his heart being wretchedly hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. (Matthew Henry’s Commentary)
I Samuel 29:6 – God can hide His purpose from all who oppose Him.
I Samuel 30:6 – When we experience a major loss in our lives we have the option to dwell on the problem and our feelings instead of turning away from our pride in our self “Oh woe is me” and turning to God trusting Him to help us through the recovery. Also when we experience major success, our pride becomes great and terrible if we do not honor God as the source of every good and/or perfect accomplishment.
I Samuel 30:26 – David is being generous with all that he received from God in retrieving the captives from the Amalekites. He seems to be repaying the generosity of those areas that helped during the time he was running from Saul.
I Samuel 31:6 – When we have no hope we lose all that we have. God is always there if we will turn to Him, and ask Him for forgiveness and guidance. God is ready to accept us just as He did for the thief on the cross. The other thief was too proud to honor God and His plan for salvation.
Psalms 18:5 – Reminds us of Psalms 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
